Newspaper Editors Want to Know about Your Company

Literally millions of press releases are written and distributed every year by people with business interests. The Business Press Release is the type that daily newspaper editors receive most often. Remember, it is the editor's job to read these releases and make that decision which effects your business - which of the many gets printed in the newspaper. How do newspaper editors decide which press releases get printed in the newspaper? First, is the subject of the press release timely; is there other current news which coincides with the information in the release? Always keep your eyes and ears open for current events that are or could be related to your business activities. Next, is the subject matter newsworthy and will the readership of the newspaper have an interest in this content? Does it provide information about people, places or events that pertain to the area in which the newspaper is distributed? These questions are vital when you write your press releases.

Why would a daily newspaper print anything about your home-based, small, or one person company? First, unless you choose to tell someone that you work out of your spare bedroom, nobody needs to know. If you operate a legitimate business providing products or services, then nothing else matters. Second, all newspapers need what is called "filler." When the paper goes to layout there is always "white space" remaining after the news content and ads are placed. Editors rely on the business community to help fill this space. After a period of time and regular press release submissions by you, the editors will become familiar with your company and your expertise. Maybe the reporter is looking for a quote from an "expert" in a certain area. Once they become accustomed to receiving regular press releases from you, that expert quote or bit of advice could be yours. If you develop a marketing system to distribute press releases at least once per month, it becomes that much more likely you will be in that special list that editors depend on when needed.

Positive publicity for you and your company is the the best type of marketing. You can have control and input generating this positive word of mouth.
